The requirement for a TLC class in New York City is in place, so locals and visitors have access to safe, reliable, and accessible modes of transportation. Well-trained and knowledgeable drivers cause fewer accidents and provide better service, and the TLC is stringent about licensing. All TLC licensing education needs to be provided by a TLC-authorized provider, and you are required to have education in the following:
- New York State Department of Motor Vehicles 6-Hour Defensive Driving Course: This course will prepare you to drive defensively in New York, a city infamous for its bumper-to-bumper traffic and less-than-friendly drivers. You’ll learn how to avoid accidents, what to do if you’re the target of road rage, and how to keep yourself and your passengers safe.
- Passenger Assistance and Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle Training: This course teaches you how to be a more accessible driver. You’ll learn how to help someone into your car, how to drive a wheelchair-accessible vehicle, accessibility, and how and when to refuse service if you don’t have the proper equipment.
- TLC Driver Education Course: These courses are called TLC 24-hour classes in New York City. You’ll learn about geography, map reading, customer service, rules and regulations, safety, etc. over three consecutive days, eight hours each day.

Renewal Class
